For my husband's college graduation party. I was going to throw a party at our apartment (and get some wine/beer), but was talked out of it in my last question I asked because of neighbors, etc. We can not afford to pay for everyone's drink at a bar. We're not expecting gifts either! I really just want to get all of our friends together to celebrate this. He's been trying to graduate for 9 years. Would it be appropriate on the invitation to say:Dan's Graduation PartyJoin us at (Insert Bar name here)On (insert date)*We'll buy the first shot! *No gifts please. Is this appropriate? If so, how do I go about wording it so they pay for their own drinks? But we'll buy the first round, but I can't afford a $1000 tab either..

I think it's fine especially because it's your friends, and it seems kind of casual. I'm sure your friends will understand that you're not having an open bar type party - especially at a college graduation!

I do this all the time. Your friends will totally understand. The invitation can say something along the lines ofCome help Dan celebrate his graduation on Saturday, July 19 at 8:00 at the Red Lion. Join us for a round of shots on us at 9:30. We are looking forward to seeing you. No gifts, please.People totally get that they will be responsible for their own drinks if it's held at a bar. Some bars will even let you book a small room free of charge since they know people will be going to the bar to buy their drinks. Have fun and congratulations!

I just threw a party for a friend and told the bartender that I did not want things to go under tabs. At the end of the night someone usually gets stuck paying for way more than they thought they would (people "accidently" or not leave without paying.)In the invitation, we wrote that it was a "cash bar." We are all friends and no one was offended.
