My mother wasn't superstitious but my mother-in-law knew several things to avoid. Don't put a hat on the bed or someone will die.Sneeze 3 times, see your love before supper time.Black cats are bad luck. She knew a bunch of them but I always tried to forget them. It kind of worried me that they might come true.

My mom was always telling us superstitions when we were growing up. Don't tell a dream until you had breakfast to prevent bad luck. She told us if we leave the house and forget something, when we return, we had to sit down before leaving the house again, or it was bad luck. Spilled salt, take a pinch and toss it over your left shoulder. That is where the devil lurks, because everything to the right was of God. If an owl landed on your window sill, it was sign of a death in the family. If you were driving and a black cat crossed your path, you made an X on the inside of the windshield with your finger. lol If you put your pajamas on wrong side out, you had to sleep in them that way because to turn them right side out was bad luck. You had to eat black eyed peas on New Years Day to have good luck all year. If your palm itched she said you were going to either shake hands with a stranger, or come in to some money. If you foot itched, you were going to get a new pair of shoes or walk on strange ground. Those were just some I remember her telling us. |

And I thought my mom to be a bit too extreme sometimes. She scared me one time when we went to a flea market and someone had a ouija board out on display, I grabbed the "mouse" (little joke) and started to move it, my mom looked over and gasped yelling, "DON'T TOUCH THAT!" She walked over, grabbed my hand and pulled me away.

My Mother grew up in the same town that we lived in until I was eleven and she liked to tells us about an old, old woman, thought to be a witch, who walked the streets at night when mother was a young girl. The streets were paved with gravel and mostly crushed oyster shells and there were numerous mud holes in the streets that filled with water in wet weather. As Model T's and Model A's made their way down the street in the dark night with there headlights on they would see this old lady and they would blow their horn at her to get her to walk on the side so they could pass by and as they passed they would hit a mud hole and splash her with dirty, muddy water. The horns on those old cars sounded like Ahoooogah ! Ahoooogah ! So, everyone called the old lady "Ahooogah". Mother would tell us to behave in the car or she was going to have Daddy stop and put us out on the street and we would have to walk with Ahooogah. Needless to say, we were pretty well behaved with a threat like that hanging over us. My maternal grandmother told us of an old lady they called Old Lady Naratuck who was thought to be a witch in their little farming community in Central Texas. They were a very superstitious people and they would have " Old Lady Naratuck come and remove the hex on their milk cow before she had a calf because they believed that there was a hex on the cow and she just might die having her calf if the "Community Witch" didn't come by and say a chant that would free the milk cow of that terrible hex.

Suzie - I think we had the same mother! I remember all of the above - - - and another: when I was getting older - Mother showed me how to slice bread. Because "if you cannot slice bread evenly you will never be able to control a man" - - - - now who on earth would want to do THAT? Hugs and a star! CJ

I grew up with a lot of the same one as many on here, another one was if you drop a spoon a baby is coming. If your ears burn it means somebody is talking about you. There was one that meant company was coming, I think it was if you drop a fork, not sure. Its been a long time. Anyway it was fun reading all these.

My mum used to be just like that.In the last few years though she has had some counselling sessions and she has learnt to be more in control of her thoughts. She now realises that green is a lovely fresh colour that stands for 'go' and 'life' and she is in control of her own destiny regardless of whether 2 knives got crossed or someone gave her pearls.

I never thought much about my mothers superstitions. Then a couple of days ago I found some Peacock feathers and decided to make some fishing floats. I sat outside making them...so some of it's rubbed off ..wouldn't dream of taking them in the house.same with lilac.
