Gift certificates are always a winner. They seem small just b/c they are a piece of paper but I know many like them. That way they can get whatever they want!!

Get him a subscription to a magazine that he likes. You could get one for $20 easily with all the deals out there. Mens Health, GQ, Car and Driver, or Consumer Reports are good ones.

A portable DVD player is nice. Being battery operated he can watch movies at leisure or when traveling.

Don't get a headache..! away from material things,it would be better that you sang a nice song to him in a way as a serenade..!He would appreciate such gesture better than others...in addition it is cheaper !

I notice that one of your first responders mentioned gift certificates, but I have always felt that those were too generic and impersonal. The suggestion of an Ipod might be a good idea, but they are pretty pricey and he may already have one.I have always favored interactive gifts - something the person can DO something with - preferably in the recreation category, though (for instance, I would never give pots and pans to a housewife). That way, your gift is appreciated and valued every time they use it.How well do you know this brother? Hobbies and specialized interests are always fertile ground for gifts. Does he collect anything?Does he have a special interest in any subject you could relate a gift to? Like getting someone who loves maps a jigsaw puzzle of an antique world map. Or giving someone who owns a Golden Retreiver a calendar with all pictures of Golden Retreivers on every month. Giving a real coffee lover an assortment of gourmet coffees or a presspot coffee-maker. (For example, my daughter has a strong interest in the occult and she loves beautiful pictures - especially of fairies, so I got her a set of tarot cards with fairies on them.)Well, you get the idea. If you don't know him very well, then ask your parents or someone who knows him really well what he likes or has a particular interest in.Does he have a some sort of a problem that a simple little gift could solve? (My boyfriend was always complaining about his coffee getting cold before he could finish the cup, so I got him a miniature hot-plate type of thing just for keeping a cup of coffee hot.)Choosing the right gift for someone can certainly be difficult at times, but in the end, it is worth the effort.
