Hi, here's the background: I live in Thailand as an MK and will be visiting America a month from now, for a couple months. I have been there once before and made some "just friends" friends. I am not aware of the American customs and, particularly, the custom down south in Alabama, where I will be going. Since I live in and/or have "visited" a "foreign" country, am I obligated to bring any gifts back? I would very much like to show these friends my appreciation of them and how much I treasure them, but is gifts going a bit too far? If so, what should I do? How can I show them my appreciation without it looking to weird or, even worse, insulting? Thanks so much for the help!!

Get them inexpensive gifts like keychains.........and get identical ones to avoid the hassle of figuring out what they like.

If you can afford it by all means bring a small gift. It is always exciting to receive some small thing from a forgein country that is not available locally. I recommend something very small in size and cost so you can easily carry it through customs. It would also be great if it could be something that your home region is famous for.Likewise find some small token gift in Alabama to bring back home for your friends in Thailand.Enjoy your trip...........

What about bringing some food/drink back? And then organising a tea or small party where you share these - and perhaps show photos etc.

Will you be staying with any of these 'just friends' friends? If you are, you should definitely bring a hostess gift for them. As far as other acquaintances go, gifts aren't necessary, but are always nice! Forget the keychains.. no one really wants another keychain! But I'm sure that there are candies and small delicacies that are inexpensive, light, and travel well that would be appreciated! My daughter recently travelled to Australia and fell in love with TimTams, which apparently are a very ordinary cookie down under, but are a real treat to her! I bet you could find things that seem ordinary to you but would never be found in Alabama, that would be wonderfully exotic to your friends Smile
