I think you should get your sister a boston terrier. They are very people orientated, very very very smart, easy to train, and so very full of lots of love.....I have 2 boston's, a rat terrier, and an Akita. But I highly recommend Boston terrier's....

Hi, Do you want to give her a large breed, medium sized breed or a small breed dog? Large breeds are pretty noisy, they're normally your watchdogs like your Dobermans and Rottweilers. I have Staffordshire and a black lab and they are both pretty cute and i believe they're medium sized dogs. They bark really loudly though when they get the scent of someone they don't know. As for small dogs I'm partial to Sausage dogs and Toy Poms. Maybe you should ask some of your sister's friends if she's mentioned what kind of puppy she'd like? Hope this helpsAs for hybrid dogs being smarter, I have a pure bred black lab and she's pretty smart. and I have a three month old mixed breed puppy and she's as dumb as a stump. I'm hoping obedience school will help. I think bitches are smarter than boys(but I have all bitches so I may be biased)

NEVER buy a live animal as a gift. Picking a pet is a personal choice...and having someone suddenly gift you with the responsibility to care for an animal for the next 10-15 years is not fair. It does not matter how much she has wanted a puppy. Is she going to be able to afford to care for the dog? Responsible enough to feed it, take it to the vet, clean up after it, maintain its health, walk it? Please do not surprise your sister with a dog. If you talk to her and tell her you would be willing to buy a dog for her, then she can have input on what kind of dog she wants, and you can pay for all of the supplies the dog needs.Check with your local shelter first. There are so many animals out there that need homes. Many of them are unwanted pets that outgrew their homes...many were cute cuddly puppies given as gifts that eventually people decided they do not want. Please think this decision over first.

I would suggest a Basset Hound. They make great dogs for families or a single person. They are pretty laid back and get along with pretty much everything and everyone. And no. Mutts are not normally smarted than purebreds. It depends 100% on the dog. Not the breed or what he is.
