Share pictures with the family of Toronto that you might have. Canada is tight. I always thought Japanese people appreciated everything. Watch out for the maple syrup though, it's a liquid! At least in the US we can't carry on those that stuff..

Beef jerkey would probably be appreciated. It's always a popular snack (especially with beer, which the Japanese love), and it's often expensive in the East.

Although it's unfortunate that you do not know who and what ages your family members will be, these are good gifts:-A Canadian flag-Although you are bringing maple syrup, many Canadians also bring maple cookies (or candies). This is very popular, and it is also very Canadian-A recipe book of stereotypical/popular Canadian recipes-A photo album - this is probably the BEST gift. Your host family will be very interested in your personal life/experience as a Canadian, so an album of you, your family, pets, hobbies, your city, your travels, etc. is a great gift, and it will help you to explain to them about life in Toronto and Canada.-CDs of your favorite music is a good gift for people your age. It doesn't have to be Canadian, especially since American, Canadian, and British music are all very popular in Canada.-Handmade items, if you or someone in your family makes anything are appreciated.-Items that are made in your hometown (Toronto) or that your town is famous for. Something from the CN Tower, for example, would be a nice present.Shirts are a good idea, though. If it's possible to get shirts with Canadian symbols on them when you find out, you should try to do that. They will like it!Have fun in Japan!

Since no one has mentioned it yet, I will throw this out there:Many Japanese people travel or love to travel. Niagara FAlls is a VERY popular attraction for them. I grew up in Detroit and have lived in obth Japan and Korea now, and stories of Niagara never fail to awe the crowd.I am guessing that you have been there many times as a kid if you are from Toronto.Do you have photos? A photo/coffee table book about Niagara will also go over well.Do you know anyone going to Niagara before you leave?Basic souvenirs.. like the Salt Water Taffy that comes in a Naigara FAlls commerative tin would be a BIG hit. I am not knocking Toronto, but Niagara is the destination sold at the Japanesse travel agencies.

You probably been given many suggested gifts but one of the thing to pay attention to is the packaging. Japanese are view your sincerity from its presentation. So please make sure it is nicely wrapped, packed, presented. Have fun in Japan!
