They met in Dublin, so perhaps something Irish-themed?Could be a gift each, or a joint one. Academia is a big part of their lives (he's a science PhD; and she's a psychology/language student). Fill the basket with a couple of "scholarly" books, wine glasses, a bottle of wine, a cork screw, cloth napkins, and whatever else you think would be creative to throw in. Most picnic baskets these days come fully prepared with silverware, so you wouldn't need to include that.
