If the oldest is going to college, I used to make up an electrical basket. It had extension cords, plug bar, adapters, a couple light bulbs, things like that. People laughed at first, but then thanked me immensely when they got to their dorm room and discovered how much they needed it to be able to plug everything in.

HS is always money...unless you are the same age as the graduate and also graduating. Include some words of wisdom, a prayer or blessing.... put something cute on the envelope....or something funny like a dilbert, calendar, money clip, or just a fancy bow with streamers. Grammar school is a time when kids feel very grown up....if you are close to the family then its time for a piece of jewelry....if not, movie tickets and cash, or just cash.... is it 6th grade or 8th grade. A sixth grader can still appreciate some toys or fun things ....check with the mom. But an 8th grader is ready for electronics and expensive toys so unless you know their music taste---money it the way to go. If you dont want them to blow it on electronics and junk get them a savings bond...for college....
