Giving money for a high school graduation gift...I need your advice!?

I am going to a high school graduation for a friend's son. I know the mom very well. I really don't know her son at all. I want to put money in a card. How much is appropriate ---what's typical? Like (well I did not want to put any thinking into a gift for you ) Go get a gift card for about $25.00.That way it looks as if you put a little thinking into it.And teens love those cards. You would probably want to go a little higher the more closely you are related to the graduate.
