Gift for first birthday?

Author Message p106_peppy Yahoo User Posted: Sun Jun 24, 2007 10:15 am    Post subject: Gift for first birthday? k, so my upstairs neighbour is having a birthday party in our backyard this afternoon for his daughter. She's gonna be one. When I came home from church the neighbor was setting up some tables and stuff and saw me, and said if I'm around I should come. I will be around, but I don’t really want to come because I'm extremely shy. But I had planned on spending the afternoon gardening, so whatever I do, I'll bump into them. Anyway, regardless of what I do, since they asked me to come, I feel obligated to at the very least get her a gift. Although I have no idea what would be appropriate. Any ideas? i was thinking a bunch of flowers, but I'm not sure it's okay, because that's more a gift for the parents than for the baby. I don’t want to spend a lot either, so please help.It’s Sunday, but even though I have an ethical opposition to Sunday shopping, I think it’s okay in these circumstances, however, not much is available to me. There is a big grocery store near here with a florist that also sells clothes and a few toys, there is a dollar store, and there is a drug store. So question 1: Am I obligated to attend?Question 2: Do I have to get a gift?Question 3: what type of gift should I get? You don't have to, but it'd be a nice thing to do. You don't have to stay the whole time.2. You don't have to, again, but it would be nice.3. Any kind of cute little stuffed animal, or maybe even a little hat or something. Avoid the garden so you don't have to see them. But if you do go just get a card. Don't worry about a gift as you were only asked last minute anyway. A card is good enough. Maybe some other time when you are baking maybe take over some cookies or something. Just get a gift card for one of the stores near you and the parents will buy the baby something cute with it. Or put a $10 in a card and call it a day.And you're not obligated to go anywhere you don't want to. But if you'll be out there gardening, for heaven's sake, go have a piece of birthday cake and get back to work. You don't have to stay all day. They invited you to be neighborly, so go have a piece of cake, ooh and aah over the baby a little bit and get back to work. They're not going to care that much how long you stay, they were just being friendly.But yes, if you go, you should have a gift of some kind. Trust me, a card with a $10 bill in it is just fine. IF you want to go, a nice card with say five or ten dollars inside would be absolutely acceptable. ALSO, considering the short notice, I would not expect a guest to bring a gift. If I expected a guest to bring a gift I would make the invite much earlier than the day of the party. I'd run out and pick up a cute First Birthday card and enclose a small amount, maybe $5.
