I got a beautiful (and expensive, hehe) necklace as a graduation gift from my father's bosses. I don't know them too well, so I'm completely shocked & happy. I want to call them today to say "thanks", but what's a good way to word it? What should I say after they say "you're welcome". I want the gratitude to be able to come naturally, but I just get tongue-twisted and sound awkward. I'm not really sure what to say. Obviously, "thank you", but I have to say more than that if I'm talking to them.

You could write them a thank you note instead?

A phone call is not appropriate, particularly for an expensive gift (since you are asking about it here in this section, I presume you want to know what's considered "correct"); you need to write a short thank-you note.

As with the others on this board, I'd highly suggest you write a thank you note. Pick some nice stationary (if you don't have any, you should buy a thank-you card from Hallmark) and write a note: thanking them for the necklace, thanking them for their impact on you and your family's life (even if they haven't had much), tell them an occasion you'll wear the necklace or an outfit it "matches perfectly" with, thank them again, and sign off with an appropriate ending. A call just sounds too casual, and maybe even a little lazy (even though it doesn't sound like you are at all). Also, it avoids some awkwardness that a phone conversation might bring! Good luck, and congratulations on your graduation!

Most definitely write a thank you note- do not just make a phone call. That would be very poor etiquette. In the note, tell them you adore the necklace and thank them for thinking of you, for their thoughtfulness and for their generosity. Make you you write thank you notes for any other gifts you received, no matter the price =)

Write a Thank You note instead. Its much easier. Your gratitude in remembering me at this special time in my life has truly touched me. I sincerely thank you for taking the time to commemorate my graduation from (enter school name here) I will always look back fondly on these days whenever I wear this beautiful necklace.

A handwritten thank you card/note is more appropriate. You just need to say thank you for the gift and tell them how much you like it and how thoughtful it was of them to send it etc.
