No it is not required for them to buy gifts. The gift is them purchasing their attire for the wedding. It's not actually required for anyone to buy a gift its something you do out of kindness...

you are never "required" to give anyone a gift but I think it would be in poor taste not to give a gift. SIL - is wrong.

I would say yes since usually if you are in a wedding, then you are close to at least one of the couple and would WANT to get them a gift.

I had 3 out of 10 give monetary gifts to us but honestly I was kinda shocked that I even got anything from any of them. They spent money on the outfits we wanted them to get and the girls gave shower gifts and they did bachelor/bachelorette parties too. Lots of stuff goes on behind the scenes by the wedding party.

No you are never required to buy a wedding gift, whether you are in the wedding party or not. The gift should actually be saying "yes" to being in the wedding party. But, you can give a gift to the couple if you want to.I am a bridesmaid in my SIL's wedding and I plan on giving a gift. She is my bridesmaid in my wedding and I do not require or expect a gift from her or ANYONE in my wedding party. Their gift is them saying yes.
