it depends on where you live... some areas are more expensive to others, so $50-75 might seem cheap. I usually stick to $100 as a good rule and if i'm going to what i feel is an expensive wedding, i give $150-200

Some say, as a rule of thumb, whatever you think you meal costs. I don't necessarily agree with that because it's usually the bride's parents that pay for most everything. Maybe if it is a lawn reception, $30; if a big bash, $50-$100. If it were my best friend I would do everything I could do for him/her in addition to whatever I gave financially. That is more meaningful. It really depends on what you afford, too. A friend would not expect you to give $100 if you are a student; on unemployment, have a large family, etc.

It's not what you give, but the way you give it.Newly Weds saw a gift marked, "Place in freezer and leave there until used."The Card said, "There will come a time when both of you had a hard day and neither of you will feel like cooking. That is when you should use this gift."Inside was $60 with a note saying, "Take a taxi to a nice restaurant and have a beautiful night out, just the two of you."

Generally it is meant to be double the cost of the meal. Depending what type of reception they have you might get away with $30 up to $300 for something VERY elaborate. I don't recommend you use this method though. Don't give less than $50, but make sure it is an amount you can afford. I generally give $100.
