|
|
I know Christmas is way off, but I like to start budgeting in August. We have a nice sitting chair that means a lot to my wife - it was handed down to her from a favorite relative. She has admitted, and I agree, that due to natural wear and tear that it needs to be professionally cleaned and reconditioned.I would like to make this a surprise for her as a Christmas gift, but risk she may not like the finished product. Though I would not do anything not professionally recommended to restore such an old chair. But if I involve her, I know she will back out upon learning how much it will cost to have it done right - even though she would really like it done. If I make it a gift to her, she never has to know how much it cost.Understand my dilemma? What do you think - risk that it may not be her vision or risk that she will nix the project because of costs?

You could suprise her that you have already purchased the present, but let her help decide how it will look. or you could find some very sneeky way to find out exactly what she wants done to it...

I have no doubt that with your obvious thoughtfulness your "vision" would suit your wife perfectly. Just do it. I would be unbelievably touched if I were she.

It ought not change the look of the chair, just the newness, right? If that is the case and the refinisher thinks the new product will just be a beautiful rendition of the old, you can do it without her knowledge.

Why not ask her about what she dreams would be the ideal refurbishment for the chair, then make it happen. Then you wont have to be so worried about the finished product, and still not have to tell her how much it cost to have done. Perhaps have a whole conversation about what you would like to have as furniture...

I would think about another Christams gift for her and let the chair issue be a joint decision.

You know your wife better than anyone. If she really wants the chair refinished, then go for it. It is Christmas. It will be a good gift.Perhaps you should just talk about the chair in casual conversation. Try to work your chat towards what she would want the chair to look like someday.

I think that is really really sweet; so here is what you can do to make sure it comes out EXACTLY how she wants it to. You get a quite at some place then make up a certificate, (unless the place has gift certificates) for a professional reconditiong (masking the price of course.) Give it on her Christmas Morning and tell her this will take care of whatever she envisions for her favorite chair.

Well, you know your wife and you should know her taste. Maybe take her to look at some new chairs and see what kind of material she likes. If she leans towards green or blue or flowers...etc. It does cost to have something like that done but, it is a good gift if she really loves the chair. Call around find out how much it will cost and how long it will take. I wouldn't tell her it should be a surprise.

I would pick up a couple magazines that have antique furniture in them and some evening while snuggling on the couch go through them together. When you see a chair with a particular finish, ask her what she thinks. Generally speaking I would have it done to match the other furniture in your house. So if you have dark wood, go dark, etc. Just a thought.

Is there a way to talk with a restoration company, pay up front so that you can present her with a "gift certificate"? That way, she can also have a say in how she would like to have the chair redone. I really don't see how she can refuse such a sweet gift after its already "bought and paid for" and obviously, with a lot of thought into it.

If you are just having it cleaned and restored to its original condition, i dont think she will have any problem with the finished product....just dont change the fabric or anything.Surprises are always the best way to go. Good luck!
