My husband and I receive wine as gifts sometimes but we both don't drink wine. We have recently discovered that we like wine in cooking and I have found many recipes that need white or red wine. I have so many bottles but I don't know how old they are. How do I know if I can still use them?

You still can use them in cooking or drinking. Taste the wine and if you like it drink it. If Many of the wines labeled cooking wines are wines that have gone off during making and are not usualy fit for drinking. They often add salt to the wine as a preservitive. No problem use the wine. Those that think they know wine will disagree with me. Fancy restaurants most of the time fool the customer by using a very cheap wine for cooking.

You can't really tell by age as other factors like heat can affect how long it will keep for. So it is all down to smell and taste... if you wouldn't be happy sitting with a glass of it to sup then don't bother cooking with it. It is an ingredient in what you are cooking and the dish will only be as good as its ingredients. If you won't use dodgy meat, vegetables or herbs why use dodgy wine???
