Choose an old growth Zinfandal, such as a Francis Coppola from California, add a label suggesting the wine will age gracefully, and should be stored with care for many years. Suggest that the wine be opened and enjoyed on their tenth anniversary. Obviously, the stemware may be used in the meantime...

The type stemware dictates the type(red/white/sparkling) of wine. If that's determined, go to a reputable retailer, tell them your budget and purpose and ask for suggestions. If you don't know a good retailer, try asking the wine steward at a local restaurant. Most are happy to share their expertise.

go for a pinot noir .....one of my favorites is Lucia (from santa lucia highlands)there are multiple single vineyard designates but all showcase bright fruit but what really nailed it for me was the palate weight and the "mouth feel". wine maker Gary Pisoni does a remarkable job with these wines.

I would go for something like Mad Dog 20/20. It's got a nice kick to it, like drinking a glass of brake fluid.

Sparkling Wine is always a nice wine for celebrations like engagements. I'd recommend Greg Norman Estates NV Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir The wine is a pale straw green in color and it has a very fine, yet persistent bead. On the nose there are lifted strawberry, citrus and nutty aromas with just a hint of sherbet character. On the palate it is a medium to full bodied style with generous stonefruit and citrus flavors and a very smooth, yet generous finish. Yummy! ($16.79)

It helps to know their preferences. If they like red or white.... sweet or dry....If you're not sure of what kind they actually prefer, and you don't want to ask them, get a nice rose. It's kind of like a combination of sweet and dry. It's considered middle of the road, and you can't go wrong with that. You don't have to spend a lot of $ to get a nice wine. It depends on your budget as to how much you'll spend. You just don't want to go too cheap.... like $5. lolYou could also put together a nice romantic basket, if you think can afford a little more to spend. Fill it with some cheeses, crackers and fresh fruits. Granted, it means you'll have to wait until the evening of their engagement party to give it to them, but you could put it together quickly, adding the wine and stemware just before everything else, and head out the door. Something like that is always appreciated. You could also split the cost of such a basket with a friend or two, and give it as a group gift?
