|
|
What should we get (boyfriend and I) for a friend of his that is 57 years old. This is his first marriage (to highschool sweetheart) but they have everything. They also have more money than they need, so that is not an option either. Is the appropriate time to go for the "gag" gift? Something sentamental isn't really an option either since we don't really have any pictures of them together or anything. Ideas?

If you are really close to him, you could get a "gag" gift... but thats not so appropriate as an only gift. You could get the typical "sentamental" stuff that people typically only get at weddings (since it is his first marriage)... like a nice engraved frame, or monogrammed his and her bath sets...

Why not make something. That comes straight from your heart and they would appreciate the time and effort it took both of you to do.

I like giving a pic nic basket with wine, crackers, something sweet, glasses (you can get their names on them), candles, maybe a blanket. All they need to do is supply the fruit and cheese! Hope this helps

How about something that is more of an experience or something that is really special and personalized? Like a couples massage, or a fishing trip for the couple, or a book/wine/beer/fruit of the month club, or monogrammed towels/silver/crystal? I had friends who got married in their late 40s (second marriage for each) and I got them a really neat stone that has their last name and their year of marriage engraved in it. For Example: "Smiths, Established 2003". They have it by their front door and see it every time they walk into their house.

If they did a registry get them something off their registry. You can also get them a gift card for a home improvement store - every family loves that.

If they haven't already had the wedding and reception, take a camera and during the day take pictures and make a collage of the pics. We did this for my grandparents they loved it.

Sentimental doesn't have to mean photographs. You could give something that means something to them without a picture at all.A beautifully illustrated book of love poems, a good bottle of wine and a picnic basket, or a CD of classic love songs would all be sentimental without needing images or information you don't have.Other possibilities include: a day of pampering at a spa, a gift basket of small consumables (coffee or tea, chocolates, jam, crackers, candies, etc.), pretty candles, or even a long letter about what his friendship means to you and how happy you are that he's finally going to marry his high school sweetheart.Just think about your friend and what he means to you. I'm sure you'll find the perfect gift if you look in your heart. And if you do give them a gag gift, be sure to give them something a bit more serious, too.

I am assuming they didn't register anywhere, or you obviously wouldn't be having this problem, so have you thought of making a donation in their name? I am sure that there is some organization that would be meaningful to them. I think that this would be a senitmental gift that isn't cheesy and makes everyone feel good. It is especially nice when a couple already has all the household items they need and are financially stable.
